Panic attacks are sudden, intense episodes of fear that can feel overwhelming and uncontrollable. They often come with physical symptoms like a racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, or chest pain. Though they may feel life-threatening, panic attacks are not dangerous. However, the fear of having another one can lead us to avoid doing the things we enjoy and impact significantly on our daily life.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective treatments for panic attacks. It helps individuals identify and challenge the thought patterns and beliefs that trigger or maintain panic. For example, someone may interpret a racing heart as a sign of a heart attack, which fuels more anxiety. CBT helps reframe this thinking, showing that the symptoms are actually harmless and temporary.
Exposure is another key CBT technique. It involves gradually facing feared situations or physical sensations (like dizziness or a fast heartbeat) in a safe and controlled way. This reduces fear over time and builds confidence.
At MoodWise we help our clients reduce the frequency and intensity of panic attacks and regain control over their lives. Panic doesn’t have to define you; with the right tools, you can overcome it.
